Students Spend ‘Alternative’ Spring Break Supporting Community in Savannah, Ga.

For many, spring break is a time for relaxation. But for 15 students, their week off was spent helping the local community in Savannah, Ga. through the university’s Alternative Spring Break program. From March 18-22, they completed service projects such as sorting and organizing clothing donations, packing nutritious food for families in need and aiding in beautification of the Tybee Island Community Garden.

Florida Tech began hosting Alternative Spring Break trips in 2013. Since then, students have completed service trips in the U.S. and abroad, with destinations including Peru, Costa Rica and New Orleans. Student Life notes that the service trips give students an opportunity to give back and support communities they may not otherwise encounter, enriching both their awareness and understanding of the world.

Of course, no spring break trip is complete without a chance to explore. This year’s group got a chance to experience Savannah and its charms through a guided walking tour of its historic district and visits to the Tybee Island Lighthouse and the Savannah History Museum.

Emma Brown, a student studying psychology, joined the Savannah trip after participating in last year’s service trip to Key West.

“This year’s Alternative Spring Break was the best way I could’ve spent my time off. As volunteers, we had the chance to make a difference, explore a new city and make memories that will last a lifetime,” Brown said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the team and look forward to future trips like this one!”
