Foosaner Art Museum Offers Photography, Creative Writing Workshops to Complement Paris in the ’60s Photography Exhibit
MELBOURNE, FLA. – The Florida Institute of Technology Foosaner Art Museum will offer “Eau Gallie in Black and White,” April 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “L’écrit Voir: Creative Writing in Paris” is offered in a choice of two sessions on April 25, from 5-7 p.m.; or May 4, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All workshops will occur alongside the work of French photographer Léon Herschtritt, an exhibition of Herschtritt’s body of work from 1960s Paris that continues until May 12.
“Eau Gallie in Black and White,” a photography workshop, will be taught by documentary photographer Rick Lang. Students must provide their own digital camera; a personal laptop is preferred but not required. The morning session includes an overview of the camera’s major functions, tutorial about lighting and a discussion about black and white tones. A field trip follows for students to explore the techniques and concepts discussed. A critique session, demonstration of post-production of digital black and white photographs, and print-making from those files will follow in the late afternoon.
Carrie Chambers, Florida Tech adjunct professor, will use Herschtritt’s 50-year body of photography documenting Parisian life as the inspiration for “L’écrit Voir: Creative Writing in Paris.” Chambers will explore the Herschtritt exhibit through creative writing games followed by composition-writing and a group discussion.
Lang explores the history and culture of the American Southeast. His body of work has been shown at the University of Mississippi, the Baldwin Gallery at Middle Tennessee State University and the Florida Museum of History in Tallahassee. Lang has been the director of photography at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Fla., since 1995.
Chambers graduated summa cum laude in English with a certification to teach K-12 from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. She was awarded the Rutgers, Camden Alumni Award for Creative Writing and the Nancy Higginson Dorr Award for Excellence in Secondary Instruction in 2002. After teaching high school English in New Jersey for several years, she went on to graduate summa cum laude from Strayer University, Manassas, Va.
The cost for “Eau Gallie in Black and White” is $145 for non-members; $125 for members and $25 for full-time Florida Tech students. The cost for “L’écrit Voir: Creative Writing in Paris” is $20 for non-members; $10 for members and free for Florida Tech students.
The Foosaner Art Museum is located at 1463 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne.
