Florida Tech Presents Indian Tabla Concert Sept. 22

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Music lovers will have a chance to enjoy a tabla informational recital on Sept. 22, hosted by Florida Institute of Technology’s Evans Library and Jamie Younkin, Florida Tech assistant professor of music and music program director. The concert and lecture will be held on campus in Evans Library at 7 p.m. A reception starts at 6:15 p.m.

The tabla is a popular percussion instrument typically used in classical and devotional music in India. The term “tabla” comes from the word, tabl, meaning “drum” in Arabic. It consists of a pair of drums usually played with the fingers, palms and the heel of the hand, which are used to produce a variety of sounds, each with its own name.

The concert will be performed by Lowell Lybarger, music and multimedia librarian at Arkansas Tech University’s Pendergraft Library. His performance will be followed by a lecture. Lybarger holds a doctorate in musicology from the University of Toronto and master’s degrees in library science from Kent State University and in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Rutgers University.

The concert is free to Florida Tech students and subscribers to the Concert Series. Admission for faculty, staff and the community is $15.
