Florida Tech Student Receives Ocean Engineering Fellowship

– Gabriela Medellin-Mayoral, of Mexico, has earned a $2,500 Link Foundation Fellowship in Ocean Engineering for work toward her master’s degree in that
field at Florida Tech. She earned a bachelor’s degree in oceanography from Universidad Autonoma de Baja California in 2001.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Florida Tech’s Department of Marine and Environmental Systems has granted the fellowship. It was established in
1997 after Florida Tech received a $25,000 endowment gift from the Link Found-ation that was matched by a gift from the F.W. Olin Foundation of New York.

The Link Foundation was established in 1953 by Edwin and Marion Clayton Link. The foundation makes grants to qualified nonprofit organizations interested
in the mastery of the air and sea, and the development of energy resources and their conservation, and in simulation and training. The fellowship program
is designed to support graduate education in ocean engineering.

The Department of Marine and Environmental Systems integrates the expertise and skills of scientists, engineers, and resource managers. The faculty
includes individuals devoted to research involving the study of ocean waves and currents; coastal processes and structures; estuarine hydrology; planktonic
and benthonic organisms; meteorology and climatology; hydroacoustics; coastal and resource management; marine vehicles; biofouling; trace-metal and
pollution identification and distribution; computer modeling; remote sensing; and instrumentation.
