Distinguished Professor to Lecture on Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering Feb. 28

Public Invited to Free Presentation

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The public is invited to attend a free seminar at Florida Institute of Technology led by Professor Van C. Mow, Stanley Dicker Professor and Founding Biomedical Engineering Department Chair (1995-2011), Columbia University, in New York City.

He will present “On the Development of Biomedical Engineering and/orBioengineering in the U.S.: A Historical Perspective,” Feb. 28, from 3 to 4 p.m. The presentation will be in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex Auditorium, Room 118 and has been made possible by the Florida Tech Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Mow will place special emphasis on the roles of Columbia University and University of California, San Diego. He will present a short history of bioengineering as well as his own role in establishing the biomedical engineering department at Columbia.

Mow is one of the most prolific and well-recognized bioengineers in the world. He has to his credit 730 publications and has delivered more than 500 invited, keynote and plenary lectures. His current Google Scholar Citations number is 27,461. Over his career he has mentored 75 doctoral students and Ph.D.-M.D. research fellows; many of these have become well recognized in the field of biomechanics and bioengineering. For these contributions he has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, Academia Sinica of Taiwan and The World Academy of Sciences.

In 2005, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering created a named medal to honor his contributions: The Van C. Mow Medal for Outstanding Bioengineers at mid-career.
