Professor to Sit on Prestigious Science Channel Board

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Hakeem Oluseyi, an astrophysicist and professor in the Florida Institute of Technology Department of Physics and Space Sciences, has been named to Discovery Communications Inc.’s Science Channel Board of Advisers.

The board comprises 10 to 15 members who serve for an initial term of one year, which may be renewed. It includes a broad spectrum of pre-eminent thought leaders in the fields of astronomy, biology, physics, climate change, archeology, paleontology, sociology, environmental science, technology, business, government and media. The professor was also honored with election to the American Institute of Physics Committee on Publishing Policy for a three-year term. He is responsible for advising the institute’s management and offering advice to the governing board and the executive committee.

Oluseyi recently earned a grant for more than $283,000 from NASA. The grant, from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate Earth-Sun System Division, funds research into the processes on the sun’s surface that generate the sun’s extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and far ultraviolet (FUV) light emissions.

Oluseyi earned a doctoral degree in physics from Stanford University. He has been involved for several years in international nonprofit work to improve science education in developing countries.
