Florida Tech Establishes Melbourne Astronomical Society

– Florida Tech announces the new Melbourne Astronomical Society (MAS). The society meets on the second Thursday of the month at 8 p.m. in the Florida Tech
Physical Sciences Building, room 140. The next meeting will be on Oct. 13.

“The MAS is a place for Melbourne-area amateur astronomers to meet to exchange viewing experiences and opportunities, tips and techniques,” said Dr. Matt
Wood, professor of astronomy.

The society, which will host occasional star parties, will coordinate efforts with the Florida Tech Astronomy and Public Lecture Series and Public Viewing
Sessions. These lectures are held on the fourth Friday of every month during the school year.

By July 2006, the largest optical telescope in the state of Florida will be installed in the dome of the Physical Sciences Building. The telescope was made
possible by the gifts of the National Science Foundation and of an anonymous donor.
