Exhibition On View Until Nov. 8

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Art of Networks II, an exhibition of nine data visualizations that use art and science to make complex information more easily understood, will be on display until Nov. 8 at Florida Institute of Technology’s Foosaner Art Museum.

The exhibition is a homecoming of sorts. In 2012, the first Art of Networks opened at the Foosaner. As with that initial exhibit, Isabel Meirelles, now an information designer and professor at OCAD University in Canada, and Ronaldo Menezes, an associate professor at Florida Tech, organized Art of Networks II. They worked with Marcia Rudy, Catherine Cramer and Stephen Uzzo from the New York Hall of Science.

“It is with great pleasure that we bring the Art of Networks II exhibit to the Foosaner Art Museum, where everything started in 2012,” Meirelles said. “This second edition features works by some of the most innovative research labs and studios around the world.”

The nine visualizations examine issues in political and social science, biology, technology, transportation systems and cultural phenomena.

Visualization has played a key role in network science by adding visual insight and intuition to the numerical analyses. By studying the patterns of connections among elements in a system we can learn some governing principles of complex physical, biological and social phenomena.

In association with the Art of Networks II exhibition, Deroy Peraza, principal and creative director at Hyperakt will offer a timely lecture, “The Refugee Project.” It begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 in the Harris Community Auditorium at the museum. Entry is free with museum admission.

“The Refugee Project” is an interactive map of refugee migrations around the world in each year since 1975. United Nations data is complemented by original histories of the major refugee crises of the last four decades, situated in their individual contexts. Concept, design and production by Hyperakt (Deroy Peraza, Eric Fensterheim, Josh Smith & Ambika Roos) and Ekene Ijeoma.
