New Music Offerings Start in Fall

– The corridors of Florida Tech will be alive with the sound of music lectures as Florida Tech launches a new music curriculum. Mark Maslin, just appointed
instructorand coordinator of music programs, will lead the way, teaching two new courses this fall.

Maslin, who most recently was adjunct instructor of music at Brevard Community College, will teach the new Florida Tech Humanities courses, “Fundamentals
of Music” and “Music Literature Survey” in Fall, 2006. “Fundamentals” focuses on the study of music notation and its structure; the survey course provides
background on the historical processes of the development of musical styles.

Another music course and long-standing fall semester staple, “Masterworks of Music,” also will be taught this fall by Professor Robert Shearer.

In spring 2007, Maslin will offer a course in concert choir, in preparation for building a Florida Tech choir. He will also teach a course on music theory,
which will introduce the analysis of rhythms, intervals, phrases and chords. As in previous spring semesters, Dr. Peter Uhr will offer a course on opera,
enhancing his lectures with a night of opera at the King Center for the Performing Arts.

Maslin has conducted Mozart’s Requiem at the King Center. He is also manager of Brevard Children’s Chorus, Inc. and continues as a musician and advertising
manager at the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse. Before coming to Brevard County, he was a university music instructor in Tennessee.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of South Florida, Tampa; a master of church music degree from the Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.; and has done post-graduate work in voice, choral conducting, music education and musical theater at Florida State
University in Tallahassee.
