Florida Tech Lecture Topic Is Airplane Accidents and Human Error

– Come learn about a danger associated with flying that you may have never thought about. Dr. Judith Strother, chair of Florida Tech’s Graduate Programs in
Communication, will present “Pilot -Tower Communication-A Formula for Disaster,” on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.

Her presentation, part of the university’s continuing Humanities Lecture Series, is open and free to the public. It will be on campus in the Denius Student
Center’s Hartley Room.

“More than 70 percent of airline accidents involve some degree of human error and many of these errors were associated with failures in communication,”
said Strother. “While English has been accepted as the international language for aviation personnel, there has been no requirement for pilots and air
traffic controllers to speak English well enough to communicate effectively until very recently.”
