Welters, Stefan Present at Mathematics Conference in Tokyo
A mathematical research dynamic duo of Aaron Welters, assistant professor in the department of mathematics and systems engineering at Florida Tech, and his Ph.D. student, Anthony Dean Stefan, presented two talks about recent developments in their research at the 10th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) at Waseda University Aug. 21-25 in Tokyo, Japan.
They both presented in a mini symposium titled, Analysis, Applications, and Advances in Metamaterials and Composites, which they also co-organized. Welters presented, “Relaxation of variational principles for bounding the effective operators of composites” on a recently published paper, Effective operators and their variational principles for discrete electrical network problems in the Journal of Mathematical Physics with co-authors Kenneth Beard (one of Welters’ former masters students at Florida Tech), Stefan and assistant professor Robert Viator, Jr. at Denison University. Welters’ talk described a new mathematical framework in the theory of composites associated with discrete, periodic and continuous electrical networks.
Stefan delivered a talk entitled “Bessmertnyĭ realizations of effective tensors for metamaterial synthesis: conjectures and counterexamples” as a part of his future dissertation topic about new developments in mathematical realizability theory.
“Meeting with our great collaborators and even the authors of the books we cite in our publications is incredible,” Stefan said. “I did not expect our research to give me so many traveling, research and networking opportunities to awesome conferences in places such as Japan, France last summer, and U.S. cities in New York, Texas and elsewhere.”
Stefan’s Tokyo trip was partially funded by the National Science Foundation and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He will be giving an extended version of his Tokyo talk at the mathematical department graduate student seminar from 1-2 p.m. Sept. 25 in Crawford Building room 210. Both Welters and Stefan are looking forward to traveling to SIAM and Simons Foundation conferences this semester, and both are expected to travel to Paris, France, next year for another SIAM conference to present more advancements in their research program supported by Welters’ recent Simons Foundation Grant.
