Nakin Suksawang Named Fellow of the American Concrete Institute

Civil engineering professor Nakin Suksawang has been named a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (FACI), an honor bestowed on just a fraction of the group’s vast membership and a testament to the important research and advancements he has produced.

The designation is a bookend 13 years in the making: In 2010, Suksawang received the ACI Young Member Award for Professional Achievement.

ACI will recognize Suksawang and 19 other members who have been honored with the rank of Fellow at the ACI Concrete Convention in San Francisco on its opening day April 2. Including the new honorees, 611 ACI members are current Fellows of the institute from a membership of more than 30,000.

Suksawang is the only new ACI Fellow in Florida.

At Florida Tech since 2013, Suksawang’s research interests involve advancements in infrastructure materials including high-performance concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete and composites that emphasize long-term durability, structural safety and reliability.

He has 16 years in academia overall with an extensive background in field and laboratory characterization of concrete materials and structural performance. He has also authored or co-authored over 100 technical papers and reports.

Suksawang received his bachelor and master’s degrees and Ph.D., all in civil engineering, from Rutgers University. He is a licensed professional engineer in Florida and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Suksawang is a past chair of ACI Committee 348 (Structural Reliability and Safety) and past secretary of ACI Committee 444 (Structural Health Monitoring). He is a member of ACI committees 209 (Creep and Shrinkage in Concrete); 342 (Evaluation of Concrete Bridges and Bridge Elements); and 544 (Fiber Reinforced Concrete).

To be considered, potential ACI Fellows must have made outstanding contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products, and structures in the areas of education, research, development, design, construction or management, according to ACI. In addition, a Fellow shall have made significant contributions to ACI through committees and/or local chapters.

Suksawang has done both.

His research on high-performance concrete, early-age cracking, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer and anchors has been adopted by highway agencies in their material and construction specifications. Additionally, he has contributed to the quality of ACI’s publications as an author, editor and reviewer. Suksawang has also served as a member and held leadership positions on several ACI technical committees. He also held leadership positions on the ACI Central Florida Chapter.
