Outstanding Florida Tech Junior and Outstanding Senior Named at Honors Convocation
MELBOURNE, FLA—At Florida Institute of Technology’s recent Honors Convocation, Tiffany Farrar of Melbourne, Fla., was named Outstanding Senior and Sydney Nicole Smead of Palm Bay, Fla.,was named Outstanding Junior for the 2012-2013 academic year. They were chosen by a faculty committee from among those earning Outstanding Junior and Outstanding Senior designations within each academic area.
Farrar, a forensic psychology major, has one or two more semesters to go at Florida Tech before she earns her bachelor’s degree and can work at a government agency of choice—the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration or Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. She supports Undergraduate Psychology Program Chair Vanessa Edkins in her research on sentences for capital offenders. Recipient of several awards, Farrar also was named Outstanding Junior in her program in 2012 and has been named to the Dean’s List every term since she enrolled.
She is in the U.S. Army ROTC program at Florida Tech where she mentors freshman cadets. Last summer she graduated from the army’s Leaders Training Course in Fort Knox, Ky. Farrar also works half-time as an assistant banker and is a contracted member of the Army Reserves.
Smead, a chemical engineering major, is a Florida Tech Distinguished Student Scholar who belongs to several honor societies. They include the American Institute of Chemical Engineering; Phi Eta Sigma, a freshman class organization; Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society; and Phi Kappa Phi, a society dedicated to academic excellence. She has worked for several years in the campus Information Technology Laboratory as a support technician and is a member of Professor James Brenner’s nanotechnology research team.
Smead’s career objective is to work in an environmental, health and safety capacity in industry and to find solutions to environmental concerns through development and research.
