Human-Centered Design Institute to Hold Open House, Demonstrate New Cockpit Simulators, Nov. 6
MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Human-Centered Design Institute will hold an open house Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
University Professor Guy Boy will give a presentation at 11:30 a.m. about the diverse projects of the institute. Demonstrators will also be on hand to show the capabilities of the institute’s new Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 HCD cockpit simulators.
The researchers will use the new acquisitions to support such efforts as computer-based onboard documentation, 3D weather forecast situation awareness systems, and NextGen trajectory-based operation support systems. They also will provide a research platform for students in aeronautical engineering and science and become a showcase of human-centered design as it relates to the evolution of commercial aircraft cockpits.
“As we move further into the 21st Century, the cockpit design research lab will open additional avenues for our university to compete in research and innovation markets and contribute to aviation and space,” said Boy.
Boy and students working on their master’s and doctoral degrees study the principles of human and machine interaction, which are applied to the design and operation of complex systems. The field is an applied discipline that relates to real-world events as well as rigorous research rooted in cognitive, physiological and engineering science.
Boy is author of four major books, more than 200 scientific and technical papers and is a permanent fellow member of the Air and Space Academy. A founder of the International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction in Aeronautics, he also was executive vice-chair of the Association for Computing Machinery special interest group on computer-human interaction from 1995 to 1999. He was the co-founder and president of the European Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Engineering 1992-2008.
