Two Incoming Freshmen Earn Presidential Scholarships at Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, FLA.—William Nyffenegger of Rockledge, Fla., and Victoria Cowdrick of Riverview, Fla., have received the prestigious Presidential Scholarship at Florida Institute of Technology and will begin as freshmen in fall 2013. A combination of scholarships and grants, the Presidential Scholarship is equal to the annual cost of full tuition.

Nyffenegger, who will major in applied mathematics at Florida Tech, is a spring 2013 high honors graduate of Satellite High School. At Satellite High, he was on the varsity swimming and varsity baseball teams; a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the mathematics honor society. An Advanced Placement Scholar, he has taken 10 AP courses. Nyffenegger’s mathematics research project in mathematics, “Order and Chaos,” won first in mathematics at the Brevard County Science Fair in 2011 and fourth in mathematics at the State Science Fair that year.

He has been a volunteer with the Boy Scouts, spending over 100 hours in their food drives and as a mentor at Boy Scout day camps. He also volunteered 75 hours at a FIRST Robotics camp to prepare Golfview Elementary School teachers and students to host the tournament.

Cowdrick will become a Florida Tech chemical engineering major. She is a spring 2013 high honors graduate of H.W. Blake High School in Tampa and was dual-enrolled at Hillsborough Community College. She has been a vice president of Mu Alpha Theta; a participant in M.I.T. MOSTEC, a minority science and engineering program; a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a two-year college academic honor society; and a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She has also earned the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Awards and this spring is a volunteer at Hillsborough County’s Domestic Violence Prevention and Emergency Shelter.

Cowdrick is a flautist and ambassador for the H.W. Blake High School wind ensemble. She is also flautist in her high school Flute Choir and Symphonic Orchestra and for the Tampa Metropolitan Youth Orchestra at the University of South Florida (Philharmonic Orchestra) as well as a member of the All County Band and All County Orchestra.
