Panther Men and Women Prevail at UWG Invitational
CARROLTON, Ga.-For the first time in the Florida Tech golf program’s short history both the men’s and the women’s golf teams return to Melbourne with two
first place trophies. The Florida Tech men’s team notches it’s third ever champions title scoring a two round 606 to defeat six other teams in the 2006 UWG
Invitational hosted by regional opponent’s West Georgia at the Lion’s Country Club. On the men’s side the Panthers faced four other NCAA Division II
regional institutions including host West Georgia, North Alabama, Lincoln Memorial and Christian Brothers. Also competing on the men’s side was the West
Georgia “red” team and NAIA Thomas University.
Another first for the programs three year history included the women claiming the 2006 UWG trophy. Tech women pulled off their first tournament title
edging West Georgia on day two with a final score of 688. After the first round, Tech was behind the host Braves by eight strokes with a first round of
354, but came back today and shot the low round of 334 which was the tournament low round. Tech had the only top four golfers who shot 88 and below for the
entire invitational.
On the women’s side freshman Natalie Kohler (Johannesburg, South Africa) came on strong in the final round shooting a 88-77 for a 2nd place score of 165
leading the Panthers. Fellow freshman Daniela Iacobelli (Melbourne, Fla.) was second on the team and 4th overall shooting a 170 (86-84). Junior
Ericka Hildreth (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), who led the team after day one, shot 173 (85-88) placing 5th in the UWG Invitational.
Medalist for the women was Lincoln Memorial’s Rachel Spurs who shot 154 for the 6,007 yard, par 72 tournament course. Rounding out Tech’s counters was
senior captain Natalie Reiman (Wanham, Alberta, Canada) who finished 95-85 for a 180 two-round score. Reiman finished tied for 8th place. Junior Toni
Whaley (Battle Creek, Mi.) shot a 130 for the first round and withdrew from the second round.
West Georgia came in second with a 702, while Lincoln Memorial finished third with a 749 for the women’s field. In the men’s field, North Alabama
garnered 2nd place shooting 614 with West Georgia only five strokes behind finishing with a 619 for third place.
Medalist on the men’s 7, 021 yard-72 par field was West Georgia’s Brandon Bennett (73-73-146) swinging two-over for the first place finish. The Crimson and
Gray were led by junior Justin Regier ( East Amherst, N.Y.) who placed 5th (74-76-150). Three other Panthers finished in the top ten of the 38 player
field. Junior David D’Agostino (Melbourne, Fla.) nailed a 74 for the first round and second round 77 for a combined 151 grabbing a 6th place tie. Fellow
junior Jonas DeWitte was right behind D’Agostino with a 152 (74-78) for an 8th place spot. Junior Jeff Wittup (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) clinched 9th place
pitching in a 75-78 for a 153.
The Panthers final two golfers’ freshman Thad Clancy (Los Alamos, N.M.) and sophomore Dan Moline (Duluth, Minn.) finished tied for 20th and tied for 26th
respectively. Clancy scored 77-83 for a 160 while Moline shot 87-76 for a 163 as Tech’s lone individual.
Both teams will be back in action for the Sunshine State Conference Championships hosted by Eckerd College at Lake Jovita in Saint Leo, Florida from April
9th thru the 11th. The men’s team will get in final tournament before the SSC at the Southeastern Collegiate , April 3rd thru the 4th up in Valdosta,
Georgia.
