Explore the Outdoors at Florida Tech Summer Camp July 8-12: For Middle and High School Students
MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Department of Marine and Environmental Systems (DMES) offers a five-day summer camp to explore the Indian River Lagoon and Brevard County’s Atlantic coast and creeks. High school and middle school students are invited to attend. The camp starts Monday, July 8, at 9 a.m., and ends Friday, July 12, at 4 p.m.
Campers will enjoy many hands-on activities. They’ll examine coastal processes, including beach erosion and nourishment and the effects of pollutants on coastal systems. Participants will learn how to use a variety of field and laboratory instruments, which measure environmental characteristics, and standard techniques for biological sampling.
Typical field and laboratory activities include a boat tour of the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem, water quality testing, nutrient concentration determinations in coastal waters, towing for plankton and zooplankton, microscopic examination of samples, seining seagrass beds and identifying collected fish.
Camp activities will be held daily, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check-in for overnight campers starts at 4 p.m., Sunday, July 7; checkout ends at noon, Saturday, July 13. Overnight campers can arrive as early as Sunday, July 7, at noon and depart as late as Saturday, July 13 at noon. Registration must be submitted by June 28.
The registration fee for day campers is $375, which includes lunch, transportation to and from activities, snacks and all necessary equipment. The overnight camper fee is $675, which includes day camper amenities plus lodging in university housing and meals at Panther Dining Hall on campus. In addition, a variety of evening activities, supervision after camp hours and extracurricular activities will be provided. Ten percent off the fee is offered for additional siblings.
