ATLAS Lab, Larsen Motorsports Attend I/ITSEC

Two important components of Florida Tech’s powerful educational ecosystem attended the 2023 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference in Orlando, better known as I/ITSEC. The annual gathering is billed as the world’s largest modeling, simulation and training event.

The ATLAS Lab took IITSEC 2023 by storm, according to professor and lab director Meredith Carroll. Lab members Kendall Carmody and Yarisse Adorno were awarded RADM Fred Lewis Postgraduate Ph.D. and Master’s scholarships. Carmody also presented the lab’s recent research on Human Factors Training Implications for Urban Air Mobility Operations, noted Carroll, who also attended the conference.

Summer Rebensky, former ATLAS Lab lead, was recognized as an 2023 Top 10 Under 40 by the National Training and Simulation Association, and Rebensky and another former ATLAS Lab lead, María Chaparro Osman, Ph.D., won a best paper award.

There were 517 companies across 210,000 net square feet at the Orange County Convention Center, and among them was Larsen Motorsports and its Florida Tech jet dragster. The Palm Bay-based outfit was located in the EcoysSTEM of Learning area that “focuses on strategically and tactically building interest and educational momentum through a wide breadth of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives,” according to I/ITSEC.

Larsen Motorsports CEO and co-owner Chris Larsen said the booth was a magnet for more than 100 Florida Tech alumni attending I/ITSEC. Among the VIP special guests at the booth was Marco Carvalho, professor and executive director for L3Harris Institute for Assured Information at Florida Tech.
