Center for Corrosion and Biofouling Control Hosts AMPP Meeting
About 30 people attended a meeting of the Central Florida Chapter of the Association for Materials Protection and Performance hosted by Florida Tech’s Center for Corrosion and Biofouling Control on Sept. 14 at its seawater test facilities at Cape Marina Port Canaveral.
Members included representatives from Florida industries responsible for the maintenance and repair of ships, structures and facilities throughout the Sunshine State.
Current research activities at the test site include funding from the Office of Naval Research to develop improved methods to manage and control marine growth on ship and boat hulls, and funding from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to investigate improved methods of corrosion control to include “nature inclusive design” for the foundations that are used to support the offshore wind installations.
The meeting featured student- and staff-led demonstrations of several areas at the Port site, including Dynamic Testing of Fouling Control Coatings, Static Immersion Testing of Materials and Development of Underwater Wraps for Biofouling Control.
Meeting organizer Stephanie Decker from the corrosion mitigation instrumentation manufacturer Tinker & Rasor said the CBCC group outdid itself. “This was the best chapter meeting ever,” she said.
