Eight Florida Tech Students Awarded at FAS Conference

Eight Florida Tech students were recognized in the 87th Annual Meeting of the Florida Academy of Sciences.  

The students were honored for their achievements across several STEM-related disciplines. Graduate and undergraduate students were asked to prepare oral or poster presentations, describing their work in their area of study.

Here are Florida Tech’s winners.

In Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences:

Tenzin Yeshi: Outstanding Graduate Oral presentation, “Effects of UVC Dosage on Three Different Marine Coatings and its Efficacy in Representative Environments.” Faculty advisor: Kelli Hunsucker

In Biological Sciences:

Andrew Pyryt: Outstanding Graduate Oral presentation, “Response of Fish through Ontogeny in MPA and adjacent waters of the IRL.” Faculty advisor: Ralph Turingan

In Engineering:

Swarna Saha: Al Hall Memorial Award for Engineering and Outstanding Graduate Oral presentation, “Optimized Carbon Capture using Deep Eutectic Solvent to Functionalize Loblolly Pine Derived Activated Hydrochar.” Faculty advisor: Toufiq Reza

Robert Cheatham: Outstanding Undergraduate Oral presentation, “Carbon Capture on Chemically Activated Biomass.” Faculty advisor: Toufiq Reza

Alex Milgram: Outstanding Graduate Poster presentation, “Modeling Hydrodynamic Coefficients for Simulating Ship Maneuvering and Handling.” Faculty advisor: Travis Hunsucker

In Medical Sciences:

Michaela Foley: Outstanding Graduate Oral presentation, “Regulation of HSF1 by SF3B1.” Faculty advisor: Karen Kim Guisbert

Rahul Kulkarni: Outstanding Graduate Poster presentation, “Small molecule HSR activation using Caenorhabditis elegans neurodegenerative disease models.” Faculty advisor: Eric Guisbert

The Dr. Elizabeth A. Hays Travel Award went to Jonathan Carter, a graduate student at Florida Tech who presented “Methodologies for quantifying drag reduction in air lubrication systems.” This award aims to provide travel support for students to present papers at FAS annual meetings. Travis Hunsucker is faculty advisor.

FAS is headquartered on the Florida Tech campus.
