Florida Tech ASCE Students Make Strong Showing at Regional Conference
A dozen students in the American Society of Civil Engineers Florida Tech chapter competed in 18 events at the 2022 ASCE Southeast Student Conference last month at the FSU-FAMU College of Engineering in Tallahassee, placing fifth overall among 19 competing universities.
From the concrete canoe competition to professional paper writing to surveying, the conference featured dozens of events. “With only 12 students and so many events, we were not able to compete in all of them,” said chapter advisor Paul Cosentino. “However, when we competed, we did so at an extremely high level.”
Florida Tech students at the event were Anuar Kachurin, Vinai Balroop, Alex Bowers, Ian Garvey, Dylan Hall, Stephan Heinrichs, Alyssa McAdams, Gavin Olsen, Paul Ryan, Callie Siering, Cole Stubbe and Cole Yorio.
Among the individual achievements:
- Ryan won first place in nationwide Daniel W. Mead Professional Paper competition;
- Akchurin with Balroop took second place in the men’s slalom;
- Stubbe won third place in surveying;
- Co-captains Balroop and Hall and paddlers McAdams and Sering won fifth place overall in concrete canoe
“Please take a moment to congratulate these wonderful students, who worked for months to be able to compete,” Cosentino said. “They receive no grades for their efforts, they just love hands-on events.”
The three-day competition featured 19 schools : Florida Tech, UF, FSU-FAMU, UCF, USF, FAU, FIU, Miami, Embry Riddle, Florida Gulf-Coast and UNF, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Kennesaw State, Savannah State, Mercer and Georgia Southern, and the Puerto Rico Universities UPR-Mayaguez and UPR-Bayamon.
