Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine Appoints Doris Newman, DO Dean for Florida Tech Campus

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Following a national search, Dr. Doris Newman, DO, FAAO, has been appointed campus dean for Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s forthcoming location on the campus of Florida Tech, Executive Vice President, Dean & Chief Academic Officer Dr. William Pieratt announced.

Dr. Newman earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) in Biddeford, Maine, and completed her Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) residency at UNECOM. She is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine as well as Pain Medicine.

In addition to her ONMM practice, Dr. Newman has held faculty teaching appointments and administrative and leadership positions at several colleges of osteopathic medicine, including at the University of New England, Nova Southeastern University and Sam Houston State University, and the proposed college in Orlando.

Dr. Newman was recognized by the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) as the recipient of the 47th Annual Thomas L. Northup Lecturer Award. She is a past president of the AAO and currently serves as a vice chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Review Committee.

BCOM’s Forthcoming Florida campus

Two of the nation’s leading institutions of higher education are working together to bring the Space Coast its first medical school. The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and Florida Tech entered into an affiliation agreement to establish a four-year osteopathic medical school on the university’s Melbourne campus.

Burrell College and Florida Tech executive leadership announced the plans at a press conference Jan. 12 at the university’s Denius Student Center. Over the past three years, Burrell has operated a regional academic center in Brevard County for medical students’ clinical clerkship rotations, where 34 BCOM third- and fourth-year students are currently conducting clinical rotations. Based upon the success of this regional academic center and the positive relationships established with key stakeholders, the natural next step was to develop an additional four-year medical school location in Florida. The college has been granted permission by the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation to recruit to the Florida campus. Other required approvals could come as soon as late this summer.
