“It is with immense pleasure that I join BCOM as the dean for their new campus, and I look forward to building on BCOM’s already solid presence of osteopathic clinical training in Brevard County. I am honored BCOM’s leadership has placed their trust in me as they expand their mission of diversity and excellence in osteopathic medical training into my home state of Florida,” she said. “With BCOM-Florida’s location on the campus of Florida Tech, our students will have access to the full four years of the highest-quality osteopathic medical training as well as technology and research-focused opportunities. At the same time, the Brevard County community will enjoy immediate and long-term economic and healthcare benefits.  BCOM is ‘doing it right’ and I am so pleased to be able to contribute.”

“We are excited to have Dr. Newman join our team and look forward to her leading Burrell College’s operations on Florida Tech’s campus to further develop a four-year osteopathic medical education program in Melbourne,” said Dr. Pieratt, DO, FACP. “She has a wealth of experience in medical education and leadership, and I am confident that our students, staff and faculty will appreciate what she brings to advance our mission of meeting the future healthcare needs of the community.”

BCOM’s Forthcoming Florida campus

Two of the nation’s leading institutions of higher education are working together to bring the Space Coast its first medical school. The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and Florida Tech entered into an affiliation agreement to establish a four-year osteopathic medical school on the university’s Melbourne campus.

Burrell College and Florida Tech executive leadership announced the plans at a press conference Jan. 12 at the university’s Denius Student Center. Over the past three years, Burrell has operated a regional academic center in Brevard County for medical students’ clinical clerkship rotations, where 34 BCOM third- and fourth-year students are currently conducting clinical rotations. Based upon the success of this regional academic center and the positive relationships established with key stakeholders, the natural next step was to develop an additional four-year medical school location in Florida. The college has been granted permission by the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation to recruit to the Florida campus. Other required approvals could come as soon as late this summer.
