Presentation Focuses on Real-time Traffic Intelligence Oct. 15
MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Harris Institute for Assured Information at Florida Institute of Technology and the Space Coast Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) present a monthly lecture series on security trends and topics. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the F.W. Olin College of Science Building, second floor conference room. It is free and open to the public.
Speaker Les Niles will present “Real-Time Traffic Intelligence for Protecting Large Networks and Distributed Systems.”
Niles is vice president of Product Management at Narus Inc., where he is responsible for the evolution of the company’s Traffic Intelligence product. Prior to Narus, he was at Xerox PARC, working in speech recognition, optical character recognition, and one of the first hosted applications delivering software-as-a-service over the Web. He began his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the speech recognition field. He holds 12 U.S. and foreign patents.
Large IP networks, and the systems and services they support, are an increasingly vital part of our infrastructure. Unfortunately, they are vulnerable to malicious acts, mismanagement and misuse, despite an active research community and large commercial industry dedicated to their protection. Existing protection techniques and devices are useful, but clearly do not solve the problem completely. This is attributable to the fundamental way the network and network services infrastructure is built and operated, and the way the cyber-world is evolving. The gap can be narrowed greatly by using a set of network-wide instrumentation and analysis techniques referred to as Traffic Intelligence.
Niles’s talk will discuss the reasons for the continuing vulnerabilities, describe Traffic Intelligence and how it helps address the problem, and discuss some of the challenges in designing and improving large-scale cyber-protection systems.
