Soccer, Cross County, Volleyball Delayed for Health, Safety of Student-Athletes

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and with the health, safety and well-being of student-athletes and the overall campus community as the highest priority, the Sunshine State Conference Presidents Council has announced the postponement of all scheduled competitions in the fall sports season. This includes men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s cross country and women’s volleyball.

Additionally, fall competition schedules for the spring sports of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s golf, baseball, softball and women’s rowing will also be postponed. It will be decided no later than Oct. 1, 2020, as to whether the winter sports of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s swimming and women’s swimming can compete in the fall 2020 semester.

“The decision to postpone competitions in the fall did not come easily,” stated Florida Tech Interim Athletic Director Pete Mazzone. “As a university and a conference, that has a great passion for sports, we certainly feel for our coaches, staff and most importantly our student athletes. We will, as a collective group, continue to remain positive and work hard knowing that one day soon we will be competing again.”

The conference is planning on conducting competition for the fall sports and the spring sports in the spring 2021 semester. During the postponement of competition, student-athletes will have the opportunity for conditioning, strength training, and other practice opportunities in all sports during the fall 2020 semester, provided health and safety conditions allow these activities.
