Foosaner Art Museum Presents Free Lecture: InCiteful Clay: The Artist Provocateur, Feb. 22
MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology’s Foosaner Art Museum will present the free lecture, “InCiteful Clay: The Artist Provocateur,” Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. in the Harris Community Auditorium. The lecture will be by InCiteful Clay curator Judith S. Schwartz of New York University.
Clay has long played an important role as an artistic medium for the expression of cultural values and ideas related to history and life. Most recently, it has become an extraordinary material that pushes boundaries beyond the decorative and functional to the rendering of powerful statements about time and place.
Schwartz’s lecture will be an introduction to the exhibition, InCiteful Clay, which continues the dialog started with her research for the book, “Confrontational Ceramics,” which includes 230 artists from more than 30 countries.
InCiteful Clay adds depth to the conversation. While to incite means to provoke, stimulate, motivate and inform, the title here means that the 25 artists in this exhibition offer insight, understanding, reflection and philosophical mindfulness in their objects.
Through narrative content and representation the figures challenge convention and make visible those injustices that demand attention and thought.Working in styles that are aggressive, disturbing, irreverent and sometimes humorous, these artists see themselves as visual philosophers bringing personal insight/”incite” to vital issues confronting society.
InCiteful Clay, on view through March 16, is curated by Schwartz, professor and director of craft media in the Department of Art and Art Professions at New York University. The exhibition is on tour through ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance (M-AAA), which sends more than 25 exhibitions on tour to more than 100 communities across the country every year. The Foosaner Art Museum is located at 1463 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne.
