How to Start a Blog

I don’t know how many times I’ve thought, “You should write a blog about ‘insert interesting thing that I’m doing at that time,’” to myself.  But it was a lot.

And now here I am, writing a blog for my school, which, if you haven’t realized already, is Florida Institute of Technology.

My name is Allie and I am a student-athlete. I am majoring in communication and minoring in management. I was recently appointed the Student Blog Editor in the Marketing and Communications Office.

Man, that sounds like the start of an email.

Anyway, I’m not really sure how to write a blog. For my journalism class, student reporters have to remain unbiased, unemotional, and callous. Not really callous, but its factual writing with the only opinions being our sources. Getting off topic, but I’ll get into that stuff in my next post.

Majoring in communication was not my first choice. When I was younger, I wanted to be a marine biologist. Then, it went from cyber forensics to information technology to teacher and THEN communication. My goal is to be a public relations specialist and my dream job is publicist.

I want my blog to focus on the skills that communication students learn to connect with their audiences. These skills could be writing styles, classes that I have found interesting or experiences that I found beneficial to my studies

Every college’s courses will be different for your major. Most of the majors don’t even have the same name! They can be labeled as communication, mass communication, communication and public relations or a single field of communication. Advertising, journalism, PR and radio/TV/film are focuses of communication that can be chosen as a major.

My advice to those who are undecided, is to join clubs to figure out what you are passionate about.  At Florida Tech, we are a media board of six major on-campus media platforms.

So far, I have participated in two. My freshman year, I was DJ Hollywood for Florida Tech College Radio. My sophomore year, I was, and currently am, a writer for our newspaper, The Crimson. I play lacrosse and am in-season, so I don’t really have time to write outside school, work and practice.

I love my major. Communication has interesting subjects such as journalism and editing and layout and design and preserving our free speech. These are the things that I find interesting!

I can’t wait to share my experiences at Florida Tech with you!
