Aquaculture and Marine Biology Summer Camp Set for June 24-28
MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology will host its first aquaculture and marine biology summer camp at the Vero Beach Marine Laboratory June 24-28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp is open to all middle school students entering sixth through eighth grade. Registration is due by
May 31.
Campers will study fish biology, aquarium water chemistry, experimental design and statistical analysis. They will learn how to farm clownfish, seahorses, shrimp, coral and algae. At the end of each day, campers will visit other local aquaculture facilities to see how their lessons can be turned into careers in aquaculture and marine biology. Activities will take place in such facilities as the University of Florida’s Indian River Research and Education Center, Seahorse Source in Fort Pierce, and Treasure Coast Corals and Proaquatix in Vero Beach.
The Vero Beach Marine Laboratory is located at 805 East 46th Place in Vero Beach, about 35 miles south of the Florida Tech main campus in Melbourne. The cost per camper is $250, which includes transportation to and from field trips, snacks and a T-shirt. Ten percent off is offered for each additional sibling.
