Astronomy Professor Presents “In the BeginningOr Was It?” April 23

MELBOURNE, FLA. —Hakeem Oluseyi, Florida Institute of Technology assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Space Sciences, will present “In the Beginning…Or Was It?” The free lecture will be held on campus in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex, Room EC118, at 8 p.m.

Contemporary leading theories suggest that our universe may not be the only universe. This is a natural evolution of thought considering that humans once believed the Earth was the center of the universe; scientists believed that the sun was at the center of the galaxy as recently as the beginning of the 20th century. As the 21st century opened it was thought that our universe was the only one in existence. However, experience tells us that whenever we consider ourselves to be the only one or at the center, it turns out not to be true.

Oluseyi will discuss models of the evolution of the universe based on the latest observations and theory. After reviewing the observational basis for the Big Bang model, he will discuss predictions of the model that may be tested with observations. He will also talk about scientific speculations of the origin of our universe.

The F.W. Olin Engineering Complex is located on West University Boulevard. For more information, call (321) 674-7207 or visit www.fit.edu/aapls.
