Coming a Long Way: Computer Network Security Monitoring

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Harris Institute for Assured Information at Florida Tech and the Space Coast Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association
(ISSA) present a new monthly lecture series on security trends and topics. The series is free and open to the public.

The series kicks off April 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hartley Room of the Denius Student Center at Florida Tech in Melbourne. The first speaker will be Brian
Contos, CISSP, chief security officer (CSO) of ArcSight, a leading vendor of security event and information monitoring products. His topic is “An
Illustrated Evolution of Security Monitoring in Computer Networks.”

This presentation will trace security event information monitoring as it has evolved over the last 10 years. Early security monitoring consisted of
firewall auditing and intrusion detection systems. Today, this merges with insider threat, physical security and logical security convergence applications,
software application monitoring, identity management monitoring, foreign traveler tracking and bioterrorism detection. The result is an integrated threat
environment that provides enhanced awareness of all security-relevant information from a single operator’s position.

With 14 years spent in real-world security engineering and management, Contos has developed some of the most sensitive and mission-critical environments in
the world. As ArcSight CSO he advises government organizations and Global 2,000s on security strategy related to security information and event management
(SIEM) solutions. He has written several security books, including Enemy at the Water Cooler – Real Life Stories of Insider Threats and Physical and
Logical Security Convergence, which were co-authored with the former Deputy Director of the National Security Administration Bill Crowell. He has delivered
numerous speeches, webcasts and podcasts, and written for Forbes, the London Times, Computerworld, Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Journal, SC Magazine and many
others. Contos has held management and engineering positions at Riptech, Lucent Bell Labs, Compaq Computers and the Defense Information Systems Agency and
holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in addition to many industry and vendor certifications.

The Harris Institute for Assured Information at Florida Tech provides a forum for local security practitioners to share technical information and
