Florida Tech Presents “Weird Lightning” Public Lecture Sept. 23

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Joe Dwyer, Florida Institute of Technology professor in the Department of Physics and Space Sciences will present “Weird Lightning” Sept. 23 in the latest installment of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Public Lecture Series. The free presentation will be held on campus from 8 to 9 p.m. in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex, Room EC118. Weather permitting, rooftop public star viewing will follow.

Thunderstorms and lightning do many strange things, which scientists are just now beginning to understand. In this presentation, Dwyer will discuss what is known and not known about these fascinating phenomena, including the latest scientific advancements.

Dwyer is an internationally noted lightning researcher. His work is funded by several major grants, including one from the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
