The Indian River Lagoon Symposium 2017

The Indian River Lagoon Symposium will be held on February 9 and 10, at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. This annual symposium is open to everyone!

This year’s theme is An Estuary in Peril due to the recent algal blooms and fish kills within the past year. The theme is to capture all relevant research going on in the lagoon. Technical sessions consisting of oral presentations will be held on February 9, followed by a poster session (5:30 to 7:00 p.m.).

The goals for this year’s symposium is to spread information about the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and about what’s being done for its current situation, influence collaborations for involvement for the cleanup process, involve university students and new scientists, express the ecological and economic importance of the Indian River Lagoon to the public, and provide results and analysis that can influence policy reforms and public involvement.

The public is invited to attend a public forum on Friday, February 10. The focus of this year’s public forum is how all of us are impacted by recent algal blooms and how citizens can participate in scientific research and restoration in the Lagoon. In addition to two panel discussions, several organizations involved with citizen science will be on hand to meet with the public on the work they do and the opportunity for the public to become more involved.
