Palm Bay High Is #1 in Florida Tech Business Ethics Competition

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Palm Bay High School team took first place in the recent Florida Institute of Technology College of Business’ 13th Annual High School
Business Ethics Competition. Melbourne Central Catholic (MCC) High School was second and Satellite High School took third place. Most participating
students were juniors or seniors.

In the day-long event, held March 6, a record 18 teams from Brevard County schools and a team from Indian River County, St. Edwards Upper School, competed.
The teams developed and analyzed solutions to a business ethics problem. They focused on the real-life situation of accounting fraud at WorldCom. The three
finalists competed again, wrestling with another ethics problem.

The event was sponsored by Community Credit Union. Judges, from a variety of career fields, included College of Business Board of Overseers members and
many prominent members of the community.

Amy Evans, a Palm Bay High School teacher, coached her team, which included Mason Evans, Nick David, Katie Smith and Krystal Cashen. The team of adviser
Karen Neely, a teacher at MCC, was made up of John Brandli, Alyson Hoffman, Chelsea Woodard and Andrew Schwarz. The Satellite High School adviser was
teacher Joe Scott who coached Ted Artz, Julian Stern and Michael Russell.

The awards were: $500 per member to the first-place team, $250 per member to the second-place team and $125 per member to the third-place team. Also, each
member of the top team receives an award of a four-year $8,000-per-year scholarship to the Florida Tech College of Business. A four-year $6,000-per-year
scholarship to the College of Business goes to each member of the second-place team. A four-year $4,000-per-year scholarship to the College of Business
goes to each member of the third-place team.

Other participating schools were Astronaut, Bayside, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Eau Gallie, Melbourne and Merritt Island High Schools; and Edgewood and Westshore
Junior/Senior High Schools.
