National Teacher of the Year, Alumnus to Speak at 50th Anniversary Event

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Tech Alumnus Tracey Bailey, 1993 National Teacher of the Year, returns to the university as keynote speaker at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education’s 50th Anniversary Grand Reunion Celebration. The event, on July 11 and 12, will welcome back those ever affiliated with the department—alumni, faculty, postdocs and students.

Participants will join in a welcome mixer, a star and planet viewing atop the F.W. Olin Physical Science Building, a sea turtle walk, choice of other outdoor activities and an optional visit to Kennedy Space Center on July 13.

Bailey will speak at the dinner on July 12, returning to campus 20 years after earning his Florida Tech bachelor’s degree in science education with a physics option.

A 29-year-old Satellite High School physics teacher when he won the national honor, Bailey is just one of two national teachers of the year ever named from the state of Florida.

He worked for three years with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Commissioner of Education Frank Brogan to create and implement Florida’s new charter school law. He currently serves as the director of education policy for the Association of American Educators in Washington, D.C.

Anyone affiliated with the department throughout its history is welcome to attend. To register online visit http://411.fit.edu/eduevent. For more information send e-mail to education@fit.edu, or call (321) 674-8126.
