Earth Day with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society

Did you know that Brevard’s beaches are nesting sites for three sea turtle species? The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, stretching 20.5 miles south of Melbourne Beach plays an important role in protecting sea turtle species by preserving natural, undeveloped beaches and by reducing and eliminating light pollution. The refuge is a major nesting site for loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), and one of the only North American nesting sites for the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea).

The Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS), located in Indialantic Beach, works to protect turtles and their nesting sites by raising awareness and helping sick and injured turtles. On April 22, Florida Tech grad student and STPS volunteer Nikia Rice will give a talk on sea turtles, STPS, and how you can get involved through volunteer opportunities and turtle walks.
