The winning band will receive a recording session at the radio station's performance studio and a slot at the Sonic Waves Music Festival.

No tickets are required to attend the festival, which runs from 3-8 p.m. at Intracoastal Brewing Company, 652 W. Eau Gallie Blvd.

Young, a founding member of the 1960s folk-rock band The Youngbloods, is best known for his songs “CC Rider,” “Darkness Darkness,” “Song for Juli,” and “Get Together.”

A broadcast of the all-female, alt rock band will air at noon Friday, April 7, on Florida Tech's WFIT 89.5 FM during the Soundwaves program.

The free event, which celebrates WFIT 89.5 FM's 42 years of public radio broadcasting, will feature four bands playing rock, country, soul and more.

To be eligible, bands must be unsigned and include at least one member who is enrolled in a Brevard County high school, college or university.

On April 4, 1975, not quite 20 years after Florida Institute of Technology was founded in Melbourne, WFIT went live.
