Are you thinking about earning a degree in information systems? Well, you’ve come to the right place! I’m Pete, and I’m kind of the career expert around these parts. I know you’re chomping at the bit to learn about all the different careers that are out there for an information systems graduate, but let’s first define what information systems actually is.

According to BusinessDictionary.com, information systems is the combination of hardware, software, infrastructure and trained personnel organized to facilitate planning, control, coordination and decision making in an organization. Basically what all those fancy words means is information systems is the collection of networks people use to move data throughout an organization. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, what can you do with an information systems degree?

For starters, you could become a chief information officer, or someone who is in charge of the overall technological strategy of their organization. Typically, chief information officers focus on a specific area, such as electronic data processing, but almost always focus on long-term issues.

Chief technology officers, on the other hand, focus themselves on issues of shorter terms, such as evaluating new technology and determining how it can help their organization. While a chief technology officer’s primary responsibility is to design and recommend the necessary technological solutions in relation to that of which is issued by the chief information officer, they also work in other departments to put the company’s technological plans in place.

Finally, you could become an information technology security manager. What these people do is oversee and direct both a company’s network and its data security. Information technology security managers work with high-level executives in order to plan security policies and promote information security throughout a company. This is largely done by developing programs that keep employees aware of security threats at all times. To be an information technology security manager, you must be up to date on all information technology security measures all times.

There you have it, an entire career outlook for information systems graduates in a nutshell. I am, of course, saying “in a nutshell” because there are so many more careers out there and there will probably be even more created by the time you graduate and are ready to burst onto the job scene.
