Tennis Splits with Saint Leo; Lady Panthers Prevail 6-3
SAINT LEO, Fla. (Tennis) — Florida Tech tennis comes off with a split in the men’s and women’s Sunshine State Conference tennis double header. The women come
up big with a 6-3 win while the men fall 6-3 against the Lions.
Sophomore captain Nicole David (Fort Piece, Fla.) has really come on strong this past week going 2-for 1 against three conference foes in both singles and
doubles. Despite a loss 7-6, 5-7, 10-6 her along with Andrea Madrigal (San Jose, Costa Rica) shut down their #2 doubles opponent’s 8-2 for the easy win.
In singles action, freshman Madrigal defeated Gin Schifano 6-3, 6-2 at the #2 spot while senior walk-on Tania Gay (Caracas, Venezuela) defeated Lara King
6-1, 7-5 in the five spot.
Freshman Valerie Rapson (Rochester, NY) won the #6 singles by default. Along with David and Madrigal, Michaela Horvathova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and
Natalie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) , making her first appearance in 2007 coming back after two surgeries over the break, took the number one doubles
match 9-7.
On the men’s side the “wonder twins” Cliff Giel (Savaneta, Aruba) and Keith Kessler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were the only two Panthers to win the lone three
points for the defeat.
The pair shut down the Lions 8-0 in #1 doubles action. While Kessler defeated Neil Watson 6-3, 6-1 in the #1 spot and Cliff at the #2 spot mirrored that
win taking Brandon Stacy 6-1, 6-3 for the day.
