Balancing Act: Florida Tech Students Share Their Passion for Music

At Florida Tech, where rigorous STEM programs demand focus and precision, the music program offers a unique space for students to balance their academic pursuits with creative expression. For students like Emma Conti, Tommy Galletta, Mia Cuffel and Pedro Marcet, music provides not only a break from challenging coursework but also an opportunity to grow, connect with others and explore their passions.

From aerospace engineering students to computer science and multiplatform journalism majors, these students share how their involvement in music enriches their lives; offering a ‘sound escape‘ that helps them cultivate their skills, strengthen their resilience, and bring a fresh perspective to their primary studies. Through their stories, we see the powerful impact that music can have in complementing their main disciplines and supporting their overall well-being.

1. Meet Emma Conti

Emma Conti, an aerospace engineering and computer science senior, began singing in her high school choir. She is expected to graduate in Spring 2025 and has already secured a position with NAVAIR in Maryland.

Classification & Major: Aerospace engineering and computer science senior with a literature minor
Connection to the Music Program: Concert Choir member

“Music has been a nice break from my rigorous computer science, aerospace and literature courses. It allows me to engage a different part of my brain and balance my workload with something I love. The music program has made me more well-rounded and is a unique highlight on my résumé as an aerospace student with a singing scholarship. I’ve seen the program grow significantly since my first semester, with more voice students and expanded opportunities, which has introduced me to incredible people and provided a creative outlet that adds variety to my schedule. I plan to continue singing for life, as it has boosted my confidence and skills in ways I truly cherish.”

2. Meet Tommy Galletta

Tommy Galletta, a computer science senior, played saxophone and piano before enrolling at Florida Tech. Expected to graduate in Spring 2025, he aspires to work in game design or visual effects, combining his major with his passion for entertainment.

Classification & Major: Computer science senior
Connection to the Music Program: A cappella Ensemble member and former Concert Band member

“I initially joined the music program because I needed an outlet for my passion, and it’s been an incredible experience. What I enjoy most about the classes is the incredible talent around me and the shared commitment to creating something great. Everyone is genuinely there to create something special, driven by passion rather than obligation. I dedicate at least three hours each week to rehearsals at the Music House, and although it requires discipline and accountability, it never feels like a chore because it’s my passion. The program has not only allowed me to collaborate with talented individuals but also enriched my academic journey by showing how music’s self-critical nature relates to my STEM studies. I encourage others to explore the music offerings at Florida Tech—there are more options than you might expect at a tech school, and you might find a new passion.”

3. Meet Mia Cuffel

Mia Cuffel, a multiplatform journalism junior, began playing viola at the age of 10 and competed in state music competitions during high school. Expected to graduate in Spring 2026, she plans to attend law school with the goal of opening her own family law practice.

Classification & Major: Multiplatform journalism junior with a music minor
Connection to the Music Program: String Orchestra violist and A cappella Ensemble member

“I love how the music program integrates into my education and that I can minor in it. The courses feel relaxed, almost like summer camp, and since music is my passion, I prioritize practice, often arriving early or staying late. My involvement has improved my communication skills, as music is its own language, helping me express myself better in my major. The music program is essential for maintaining balance amid the rigor of my studies; it’s my outlet and keeps me motivated at Florida Tech. I can’t imagine my life without my viola, and I plan to keep playing as long as I can. My advice to others considering joining the music program is to embrace the low-pressure environment and the supportive relationships here. It makes Florida Tech feel like a true home away from home.”

4. Meet Pedro Marcet

Pedro Marcet, a computer science junior, has been involved with the music program since his freshman year. He played piano and violin before enrolling at Florida Tech.

Classification & Major: Computer science junior
Connection to the Music Program: Group Piano course student

“I was drawn to the music program during orientation and decided to give it a try since I always wanted to learn an instrument. The classes are easy to manage—just a couple of hours a week—and they’re structured in a relaxed, skill-building way, starting with basic music principles and progressing through practice and performance. While music doesn’t directly impact my studies, it makes me happier and more productive, which is a boost for my mental health. Interestingly, learning piano has even helped with certain aspects of my computer science work. For example, when I had to program a song for my computer science assignment, my experience with sheet music from piano class helped me understand the principles behind it. Overall, the program has been a rewarding addition to my experience at Florida Tech.”
