Their achievements not only highlight their dedication and hard work, but also demonstrates Florida Tech’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers in engineering. Discover the exciting internships they held this summer, below.
1. Meet Ryan Cormier

Internship Host: General Dynamics Electric Boat
Major: Mechanical Engineering
“In my role, I provided direct support to the trades, addressing and resolving any errors that occur during the submarine construction process. Career Services and their networking events opened the door to this valuable career opportunity, where I had the chance to connect directly with representatives from Electric Boat. As I intend to pursue a career in the defense industry Florida Tech continues to prepare and guide me down this path. The courses, connections and experience I have been learning combined with a personalized supportive learning environment have given me the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in this field. My advice for Florida Tech students seeking internship opportunities is to be active and persistent. Attend career fairs, build your network, and connect with recruiters and industry professionals. Stay open-minded and consider various industries and locations to enhance your skills.”
2. Makaila Johnson

Internship Host: Department of Defense Navy Strategic Systems Program
Major: Mechanical Engineering
“Based at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, I worked on multiple mechanical ground support equipment design projects in coordination with our contractor, Lockheed Martin, and oversaw applicable unit verification tests. Florida Tech prepared me for this experience by teaching me the academic concepts that I saw daily in my position. I hope to pursue a career in mechanical engineering after graduation, with an interest in the space industry. I encourage Florida Tech students to prioritize networking in their field to explore their interests and establish valuable contacts when applying for internships. This university has earned a reputation in our community for producing industry-ready graduates. I believe that Florida Tech goes above and beyond to ensure that students are prepared to enter their field, equipped with the skills necessary to stand out and make an impact.”
3. Kristofer Smith

Internship Host: Culpepper & Terpening Inc.
Major: Civil Engineering with a concentration in transportation.
“I worked on roadway planning projects throughout St. Lucie County in Florida. I also worked alongside the surveyors in the company and sometimes the solar department to help with exhibits. Florida Tech prepared me well for this role through the classes I’ve taken, which aligned closely with my job responsibilities. I was able to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world projects. My time at Florida Tech has helped me develop strong time management skills, discipline and self-awareness of my capabilities. In my program, the department has a vast network, and every professor is willing to guide you in the right direction. They help break down the career path options and point you toward areas that align with your interests. My advice to students is to keep an open mind when searching for internships. Even if you don’t meet all the listed requirements, don’t hesitant to apply. The more positions you apply for, the higher your chances of securing a job. Sometimes, a job might not have everything you’re looking for, but see it as a stepping stone to gain valuable experience for your resume.”
4. Brett Nastos

Internship Host: Leonardo DRS
Major: Aerospace Engineering
“At Leonardo DRS I interned as a product engineer working on Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology. Florida Tech helped me prepare for this role by giving me the technical skills and experience needed to excel in an engineering work environment. For students seeking internship opportunities, my advice is to not give up and fill your resume with technical projects you have done. After graduation, I plan on working in the defense industry, and this university has prepared me for the industry having professors with many years of experience that gave me real-world problems to solve.”
5. Ava Crocker

Internship Host: L3Harris Technologies
Major: Software Engineering
“I originally got offered this internship by attending the Society of Women Engineers Conference in 2022 with Florida Tech. After interning with them this past summer, I was offered to return this summer, as well as work part-time during the school year—since Florida Tech has a great relationship with L3Harris! I’ve been working on a satellite program where the main goal is to design, build, launch and operate a satellite constellation. My role consists of working on the development of software to control satellite planning and communications and designing the software architectural views for the system. I think the software engineering program really sets students up for success by having courses that simulate the entire software development process. Classes are set up to prepare us for industry experience and allow us to have a deeper understanding of what to expect upon graduation. After which, my main goal is to continue working with software development and systems engineering. I’d love to eventually contribute to a program that helps send people to space, and maybe even go myself one day! My time here has helped me prepare for my future in the aerospace industry. From all of the events, astronaut guest speakers, and clubs, the school really helps immerse students in their aerospace goals. My main advice for any Florida Tech student seeking an internship is don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Networking is the best way for you to meet so many new people and make amazing connections. Saying yes to any and every opportunity always has the chance to lead you to the right path!”
6. Alejandro Perez

Internship Host: Boeing
Major: Aerospace Engineering
“I spent this summer as a quality engineering intern at Boeing under the Space, Defense and Security business unit working on the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) program at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. I supported quality engineers in tracking factory preventative actions, as well as manufacturing R&D engineers in verifying some of our tool specifications and requirements. Florida Tech prepared me for this internship from day one. I learned so much from my professors in each of my classes and the foundational knowledge about engineering and science throughout my time here was key to securing this internship. Additionally, the support and advice of Career Services helped me perfect my resume and elevator pitch. All things combined and to put my learning into practice, I had the opportunity to attend the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers national conference through Florida Tech last fall and interview for my current position. After graduation, my plan is to stay in the space program. Eventually, I would love to work as a systems and test engineer at the Kennedy Space Center. Overall, Florida Tech not only provides students with the tools and exposure to our career fields, but also the environment to grow everyday as future professionals and leaders.”
