Dr. Marshall Jones is a recognized innovator in public safety and law enforcement, both as a practitioner and applied researcher. He leverages his combined experiences from law enforcement, consulting, education and applied research to explore problems impacting public and private organizations. A practitioner at heart, Dr. Jones considers himself an “accidental academic,” who has earned much of his graduate education in criminal justice and industrial-organizational psychology while working full-time in law enforcement. He also holds a doctorate in business administration with a focus on organizational behavior.
Dr. Jones retired from policing in 2003 to establish Florida Tech’s undergraduate forensic psychology program. He has served as the undergraduate academic program chair, director of online programs and on several university committees for the College of Psychology and Liberal Arts. He teaches forensic and behavior courses in criminological theories, forensic investigations, delinquency and prevention, serial offenders, violent crime, organizational behavior and leadership.
Dr. Jones is a recognized expert in offender behavior and motivation, victimology, interview techniques, police selection and training, and organizational behavior with a focus on leadership. His applied research includes chronic offender behavior and prevention, police recruiting and retention, hostage taker motivations, sexual assault, and police selection.
He is currently researching leadership challenges, including police recruiting and retention.
Dr. Jones has partnered with criminal justice agencies including the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s National Advocacy Center, U.S. Probation, U.S. District Courts, Florida Police Chiefs Association, the U.S. Army, and several local law enforcement agencies. He has been an invited lecturer at the FBI’s National Academy, Florida Police Chief’s Association, Florida Crime and Intelligence Analysts Association, International Association of Crime Analysts and several local and regional practitioner organizations.
A sought-after consultant, Dr. Jones' current consultation involves agency assessment and coaching, leadership development, succession planning and exploring new and emerging technologies related to enhanced public safety and security.
Dr. Jones is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He maintains his police certification and serves as a reserve, conducting staff research and training.
