Marco Carvalho Elected to Academy of Science, Engineering & Medicine of Florida

A New Honor for Distinguished Computer Scientist and Director of Florida Tech Research Institute

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Marco Carvalho, the distinguished computer scientist who leads the L3Harris Institute for Assured Information and the Florida Tech Research Institute, has been elected to the Academy of Science, Engineering & Medicine of Florida.

The holder of multiple patents, Carvalho’s research interests include artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection; tactical and cognitive networks and multi-agent systems; and human-agent teamwork.

“I am proud to have been elected to the Academy of Science, Engineering & Medicine of Florida,” Carvalho said. “It is an honor to be in such great company.”

He came to Florida Tech in 2012 as an associate professor of computer science and has since conducted research sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the Air Force Research Laboratory and DARPA.

“We welcome our new ASEMFL members,” said Academy President Hortensia Amaro. “Their lifelong dedication, creativity and talent have resulted in critical and impactful advances in their fields with resulting benefits to society.”

Inductees are selected based on outstanding research contributions and innovations with consequential impacts in the fields of science, engineering or medicine.

The Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida is based in Orlando at University of Central Florida’s College of Engineering and Computer Science. Among its mission is recognizing “the work of individuals in the State of Florida who have made major achievements in science, engineering and medicine.” It also seeks to “bring to the national and international forefront the state-of-the-art research and education conducted in Florida’s universities, industries and other educational corporations.”
